 I am sending  the web site for a program we have used in the classroom, STARFALL. Many of our students have found it stimulating and have their favorite selections.  I would suggest you monitor its use and encourage them to work on a number of different activities and skill sets.  It covers early literacy, numeracy, and basic math concepts in an entertaining and engaging manner.

Be sure to engage in the different options available and try to avoid your child spending to much time on any one selection.

Starfall:

Search the term; Starfall on your search engine   -Google-

Either select;

Starfall Education: Kids games, movies & books K-3

or

Kindergarten     "or"     Grades 1,2,3

Depending on what shows up on your monitor.

If you are having any difficulty with any of the programs I am suggesting please email me at

I will try to phone or email everyone over the next week to 10 days to see how you are making out and if you have any specific questions.  I hope these blogs are helpful in providing some resources or ideas that might assist you in working with your child.

I will provide you with information on the web site Raz Kids.  Again it is used in the classroom to help students progress in their sight words recognition and promote an interest in reading.  It provides a large selection of books based on reading ability.  In this class I would start at level AA and the program will slowly advance to the more advanced levels as the reader progresses.  There are several options when choosing a specific book.  The first step, with the help of a mouse, high-light a specific word, the click on the word and hear the word chosen.  Once the word is read by the program the reader may then choose another work or go to the next page.

The first week of our students staying at home has past. I hope everyone has been successful at developing a home routine that works for them.
Last week I sent home the suggestion to work on a short daily journal or coloring activity and access to GoNoodle, a physical activity website we use at school.  When we use it in our classroom I generally choose the channel setting and then allow students to take turns selecting which program to watch.  You could do this activity with siblings or adults thus promoting the concept of sharing and turn taking as well as exercise.
Today I am sending a website that is more focussed on learning and literacy.  It is the Learn Alberta website and it has a number of very good selection of books that are read out to the viewer or books that encourage familiarity with the printed text and work identification.  These can be located under the Bookflicks heading.  There are other sections that deal more specifically with nature.  Again we have used Bookflicks in the classroom and you child may have their favorite selections.

We are entering a time of change and challenge.  Together I believe there is an opportunity to provide educational learning experiences for all our students here in the Educational Support Classes at St. Matthew School.  I am posting a blog several times a week with resources to provide direction and activities to work on at home.  I would suggest that you develop a daily routine with your child. At school we start each day with a prayer time and singing O Canada followed by working on fine motor skills and our daily journal.  The journal consists of the day, month and year followed by a short comment on the day such as weather, day of the week or something to look forward to.  On the next line the student could print their full name and possibly their phone number or address. Students unable to copy or trace could work on coloring simple shapes or pictures to encourage pencil grip.
There are a number of resources online that provide educational activities to enhance skill development and basic knowledge.  I am sending a site -GoNoodle- that we use in class for Daily Physical Activity.  They may be of help providing instructional material and I will continue to provide electronic resources as time progresses.
We all hope and pray that this may be over soon and we are able to get back to our previous lives and routines. God bless you and your family.
